The Anthropic Principle

What is the Anthropic Principle?

For life to exist on earth, a large number of physics constants and astronomy properties must exist within very narrow limits. Recently, the idea has been put forth that certain properties of certain biomolecules also have these just right properties.

Here is just one of many example from physics. Something called the strong nuclear force holds
protons and neutrons together in the nucleus of atoms. If this force was even very slightly weaker, there would be no hydrogen for water. On the other hand, if the force was just slightly stronger, there could be none of the currently known elements except hydrogen. In either case, life as we know it could not exist.

Other examples apply to astronomy. For instance, within our solar system, the position of Jupiter protects the earth from meteorite crashes. Beyond our solar system, there are factors like the number and positions of the multitude of stars and the mass of the universe. All of these being what they are make for the right conditions for life to exist on a relatively tiny spot in the universe. We call this spot earth.

The simplest explanation for this fine tuning is that a superintelligence we call God set these parameters. Even an article in the journal Nature said that this was the simplest explanation (Nature 384:107, November 19, 1996). The article then commented that such an explanation falls outside the realm of science; so, other explanations have to be sought. However, even if this idea does fall outside the author’s definition of science, that doesn’t falsify the conclusions. Furthermore, the idea of distinguishing design from undirected accident DOES fall within the realm of science (ie. forensic science often has to decide between accident and criminal intent).

A God that set up the precise conditions for life would likely have great love for people (to go to the “trouble” to set up humanity in a unique planet in the big universe). The God of the Bible fits that description. This God came to earth as a man and was tortured and killed to show that love.

Also, the Bible also speaks of God who notices great detail. Psalm 147:4 says that God determined the number of stars and called them by name (meaning that each has special importance). That sounds like a God behind the Anthropic Principle.
